Mycoplasma genitalium and HIV risk

Understanding Mycoplasma Genitalium and Its Impact on HIV Transmission Mycoplasma genitalium is a surprisingly common sexually transmitted infection (STI), affecting about 1-2% of the population at any given time. This risk increases significantly with each new partner—by approximately 10%. Therefore, individuals with multiple partners face a much higher risk than average. Alarmingly, condom use does not effectively mitigate the risk of contracting Mycoplasma genitalium. The Risks and Dangers You might wonder, “Why the focus on this STI? Is it really that concerning?” The answer is yes. Beyond the direct health complications caused by Mycoplasma genitalium, it also heightens the risk of contracting other STIs. Research indicates it can double your risk of contracting HIV.  The Connection to HIV To comprehend how Mycoplasma genitalium can facilitate HIV transmission, it’s crucial to grasp the basics of HIV spread: HIV mainly spreads through blood-to-blood contact. Any infection that damages the reproductive tract, such as Mycoplasma genitalium, can heighten the risk of transmission during intercourse. The 8 in 10,000 chance applies to healthy tissue, not tissue compromised by infections. Observational studies reveal that women with Mycoplasma genitalium are twice as likely to contract HIV compared to those without the infection.Observational studies should be viewed with a critical eye; […]

How ED meds can make sex safer

How can this raise STI risks? For many people, condoms can lead to performance issues, which can significantly raise STD concerns.  Condom-related erection problems are quite common, with approximately 30% of men experiencing difficulties during condom application or intimate moments. Please review the study at this link.  Once men start facing these challenges, various strategies are employed to salvage the situation. According to the study condom related impotency has been found to be associated with more frequent unprotected vaginal intercourse, less consistent condom use, condom slippage, and greater likelihood of removing condoms before sex is over. In this study, 12% switched from using condoms during vaginal intercourse to having unprotected anal sex.  All of these scenarios dramatically increase someone’s STI risk.  How can male medications help?Intimacy is complex, and things don’t always go as planned. There’s so much more to being intimate than just penetration. That said, condoms are much easier to use when you’re fully firm from start to finish, and ED medications can provide significant help. Medication concerns and answersMany men have reservations about these medications. One concern is whether they can be habit-forming—science says there’s no physical basis for this worry. Another concern is accessibility, but today’s telemedicine providers make it easy to obtain these medications. Safety is another valid concern, given the prevalence of counterfeit drugs containing harmful ingredients. That’s […]

DoxyPEP and Women

What is DoxyPEP? DoxyPEP, also known as Doxycycline Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, involves taking a single dose of the antibiotic after unprotected sex—including oral sex—to reduce the chance of contracting gonorrhea, chlamydia, or syphilis. DoxyPEP and Cis-Gendered Women While there’s significant data supporting its effectiveness in cis-gendered men and trans women, its application among cis-gendered women has sparked mixed interpretations.  The First Study and Its Challenges  An initial study on DoxyPEP in cis-gendered women reported a reduction in bacterial STIs (including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis), but the results were not statistically significant. However, let’s dig into the details of the study to uncover the full story. Key Issues in the Study: A New Study Provides Hope  New research from Japan is painting a very different picture of DoxyPEP’s potential benefits for women. This study focused on female sex workers, a group that demonstrated significantly better adherence by taking 100mg of Doxycycline daily (half the typical DoxyPEP dose). Daily use aligned with the frequency of their occupational exposure. Key Findings from the Study: Chlamydia Rates Cases dropped dramatically from 159.2 to 57.2 per 100 person-years—a reduction of 64%. Gonorrhea Rates Cases fell from 55.9 to 22 per 100 person-years, cutting the rate by 61%.  Syphilis Rates Cases […]

I am just astounded by the availability of this service! This service bridges the gap between primary care red tape and getting necessary medications on time, when you actually need it! The sexually progressive community has been lacking resources, and now the under resourced has a perfect resource! Thank you, Shameless Care, for taking care of the sexually progressed!

I ordered a test kit in advance of a lifestyle vacation. The kit did not arrive as expected (lost by the carrier) and after some time I reached out to Shameless Care and got immediate assistance. Robert himself communicated with me to assure that my replacement kit was expedited to me. Thankfully now I will have my test results in hand before my trip. Thank you Shameless Care.

After talking to my doctor about PEP, I felt it was right for me. The doctor’s approach was to call them after I had an unprotected encounter. It didn’t make sense to have to run to the doctor’s office so I found Shameless Care. The intake process was easy, follow up was thorough, and medication was delivered quickly. I was pleased with the service and attention to my personal needs. Thanks!
