Understanding STI Testing Timing
One of the most frequent inquiries we encounter is, “When should I get tested?”
This question often arises after a sexual encounter or an adventurous getaway with multiple partners. People want to ensure they’re testing at the right time to confirm they haven’t contracted an infection.
The Challenge of Timing
The truth is, pinpointing the perfect timing for testing many infections is challenging. For instance, consider mycoplasma genitalium. Some sources suggest testing five days after exposure, others propose anywhere from two to 35 days, and yet others recommend four to eight weeks. The fact remains, no one knows!
Regular Testing Strategy
That’s why I personally opt for monthly STI testing. This approach ensures that even if I test negative initially, any subsequent positives are still caught early. My primary concern is not just my health, but preventing the transmission of STIs to others.
Finding Your Rhythm
Testing monthly doesn’t suit everyone, so it’s crucial to establish a routine that works for you. That may be every other month, or every six months. It’s entirely up to you.
The key is that you can’t perfectly time these tests based on exposures; they simply need to be scheduled and followed consistently.
